ADULT BMT/HEMATOLOGY (E-3)

The adult BMT/Hematology Unit is an acute 15-bed unit. The unit admits patients with a variety of hematology disorders such as leukemia’s, Aplastic anemia and lymphomas. Patients are admitted for BMT, treatment of post transplant complication, diagnosis and treatment of a blood dyscrasia and occasionally for terminal care.

Frequent Procedures/Services/Functions
• Medication delivery including chemotherapy administration and management
• Blood product administration/marrow infusion/stem cell infusion/cord blood infusion.
• Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture, skin biopsy
• Total body Irradiation
• Nutritional support (TPN, weight, caloric count)
• Continues bladder irrigation
• Management of Myelosuppression
• Central line management
• Oxygen therapy and pulse oximetry
• Patient/family education/emotional support
• Patient assessment and evaluation/hemodynamic monitoring

Major nursing clinical functions include:
• Assessment of vital signs, fluid and electrolyte balance, body systems, symptoms, psychosocial needs, and educational needs
• Intervention based on both a nursing assessment and on physical directives, including: airway, respiratory management, IV therapy, fluid and electrolytes balance and replacement; nutritional support, symptoms management, infection control using standard precautions, skin and wound care, oral care, ADL needs, psychosocial care, discharge planning, palliative care, administration of medications and chemotherapy, emergency resuscitation procedures, assisting medical staff with procedures and coordination of various discipline/departments.
• Education of patient and caregiver regarding diagnosis, treatment plan procedures and discharge teaching.
• Evaluation of patient response to intervention, treatment and education.
Patient care providers include Head Nurse, registered staff nurses, case manager, Clinical Instructor, PCA, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, Patient relation personnel, home health care nurses, radiology technologist, IV therapist, phlebotomist, nutritional support and consulting services.
